What is the Smith Lateral Step-Up?

The Smith Lateral Step-Up is a functional exercise that primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. This exercise enhances balance and unilateral strength, perfect for effectively strengthening your legs.

How to properly perform the Smith Lateral Step-Up

  1. Place a stable bench or box next to a Smith machine.
  2. Set the Smith machine bar to an appropriate height and load it if needed.
  3. Stand beside the box with your shoulder under the bar and your closest foot placed on top of the box.
  4. Position the bar across your traps and securely unrack it.
  5. Push through the elevated foot to step up laterally onto the box.
  6. Lower yourself back down in a controlled manner.
  7. Repeat for the prescribed number of reps, then switch sides.
